Synopsis
One day an old, childless bamboo cutter called Taketori no Okina ( 竹取翁, “the Old Man who Harvests Bamboo”) finds a girl in a shining, mysterious stalk of bamboo. The girl is only the size of a finger. He rejoices to find such a beautiful girl and takes her home. The old bamboo cutter and his wife decide to take Kaguya-hime, a name she’ll only receive later, as their child. When Kaguya grows up, five men from prestigious families propose to her. Kaguya asks the men to find memorable marriage gifts, gifts that would endorse their love, for her, but the five men are unable to find what Kaguya wants. Then, the Emperor of Japan proposes to her.
